• How do I set up an audition?

• Can my letters of recommendation be mailed separately from my application?
  Yes. We realize that some people providing letters of recommendation will feel more comfortable mailing the letter directly to us. • Can I audition by videotape or dvd?
  We can only accept taped auditions for the Summer Workshop. That said, please make sure the quality of the recording is good. If we cannot hear you or see you well, we will be unable to make an informed decision on your admission.
  
  Applicants for the Two Year Workshops must audition in person either in New York or at one of our national audition cities. Admission to the Two Year Workshops is highly selective. • How long will it take for me to find out if I am accepted?
  Only after you have completed your audition and we have recieved all your application materials can we make a decision on your admission. This usually takes anywhere from a week to a month or more depending on where we are in the audition process. • How many people are accepted into the program?
  Approximately fifty-four (54) students are accepted in the Two-Year Workshops each year. The average student age is early to mid-twenties. Circle's diverse group of students comes from across the country and around the world.
  
  For our Summer Workshops, we often have a much larger class, opening up the minimum age for applicants to 15. • How many people audition for the program each year?

• Where do I go for my audition?
  If you are auditioning at one of our national auditions, you will be informed of the audition location once you have been scheduled for an appointment.
  
  If you are auditioning in New York, you will be coming to Circle in the Square Theatre School. We are located at 1633 Broadway New York, NY 10019 and the entrance to the theatre is on the 50th Street side of the building between Broadway and 8th Avenue. Look for the Circle in the Square box office which is located in the breezeway, directly next door to the Wicked box office. Enter through the box office and go down two flights to the lower lobby where the restrooms are. The school office is located on the right.
  
  In the event that the box office is locked, enter through the revolving door on the 50th street side of Paramount Plaza, the office building the theatre is attached to. You will need to tell the security guard that you are there for an audition at Circle in the Square, and they will call down to our office to verify that we are expecting you. Once you have been admitted to the building, take the elevator to the left of the security desk down to the "C" level. When you come out of the elevator, make a right and you will see a door labeled "Paramount Plaza Building Office". The doors to the theatre are just past the building office and have a small sign on them that says Circle in the Square. Once inside, go down one flight to the lower lobby where the restrooms are. • How long will my audition be?
  Once you get into the audition room, it should take between 10-15 minutes. • Who will be in my audition?
  If you are auditioning in New York, the Theatre School Director, Colin O'Leary will most likely be in the audition. Sometimes Mr. O'Leary is joined by additional administrators.
  
  If you are auditioning at one of our national auditions, a local Circle in the Square representative will be in the audition. • Can I be considered for both the Musical and the Professional Workshops? What about for the summer program too?
  Yes. At the top of your application, you can check all the programs you would like to be considered for. This way, we know if you would be interested in attending the Summer Workshop if you are not accepted into the Two Year Workshop. • Can I tour the school?
  During the school year when classes are in session it is not possible to see the classrooms. However, auditions are held in a classroom so if you audition in New York, you would have the opportunity to see them then. In general, most of the classrooms are either a simple square room with folding or theatre style chairs used for classes where there is no scene work, or larger room that contains a variety of furniture pieces and props that can be used in scene work. • Does the school provide housing?
  No. It is up to the individual student to secure housing. However, once you have been accepted and have paid your tuition deposit, we can provide you with the proper passcodes to view the housing information on our website where we post any housing notices we get from our current students, alumni, and friends of Circle. Due to the competitive nature of New York City housing, we are only able to provide these passcodes to those that have secured their spot by paying a tuition deposit.   Most likely. The courses you complete at Circle in the Square are the same level as university courses. Which courses transfer is up to the college you are applying to. Upon request, we can provide a transcript of the courses you took, as well as the classroom hours per week you were in the classes. • If I am accepted, what time will I be done with classes each day?
  It varies. In general we tell students to expect to be in class between the hours of 9am-6pm each day. However, there will be some days where you may start later, and some days where you may end earlier. Schedules are not set in stone until a couple of weeks before a session begins, so we are unable to tell you exactly which days you will be finished earlier. • Do you have any acting programs for children?

• What kind of materials will I need if I am a student?
  Typically you will need dance and movement clothes, jazz shoes, a binder for music, a recording device (either cassette or mp3), money to make photocopies of scenes and music for class, and some basic school supplies such as pens, pencils, and paper. It is also handy to have a small stapler, scissors, and three hole punch. Students are expected to provide their own office supplies such as these since the office cannot provide them for everyone. • Does the school do an industry invited showcase for graduating students?
  Yes. At the end of the second year of study, we have two industry invited showcases: a cabaret which the musical students participate in, and a scene night which all second year students participate in. These showcases are well attended and a number of students receive industry attention as a result. • What kind of support will the school give me after I have graduated?
  Circle alumni frequently provide support for each other through our Alumni Group where they post information on shows they are in, audtions they heard about, recommendations for classes or workshops, housing leads, and the like. The administration at Circle is always interested in what alumni are up to. • Can I still audition for shows while I am enrolled in school?
  It is very difficult to audition while still enrolled in school since the two year program is full time. Any absenses from class must be cleared with the School Director. • If I am accepted and cannot attend, can I defer my enrollment?
  When decide you would like to defer, you may speak with someone in the office about this possibility. Generally, we will have you contact us during the Spring audition season prior to the fall you would like to attend. • How many students are asked back at the end of the first year?
  We do not have a set number of students that we ask to return for the second year. • How are students evaluated to determine continuance in the program?
  Individual teachers continually critique students' classroom participation. This critique is an integral component of the program and is the process by which each student is kept fully informed of his or her progress in each classroom exercise or setting. The Director of the School, E. Colin O'Leary, is available for consultation and counseling, along with the rest of the administrative staff. Circle in the Square does not use a letter grade format, however, the Administration holds a minimum of four formal meetings with the Faculty over the course of the school year to discuss each student's progress.

  Students periodically have individual meetings with the Director of the School to discuss the Faculty's written evaluations of the student's work and to express any concerns either the student or the administration may have. At these conferences, mid-year warnings and/or probation may be issued to those students whose work or behavior is not satisfactory.

  Re-admission to the Second Year of either program is based on a review of individual progress and motivation at the end of the First Year. Participation in Scene Night, Cabaret presentations and Performance Projects is dependent on the student making satisfactory progress.

  If a student's work or conduct has fallen below the prescribed standards, he or she may be placed on probation for the upcoming term or the remainder of the current term. A student is placed on probation by the School Administration upon the recommendation of the Faculty. Students who are placed on probation meet with the School Director, where reasons for their probation are discussed. At that time, the student my be required to appear before a panel of the Faculty where they are given guidelines for the requested changes in class work and/or behavior, as well as the amount of time these changes must be maintained before they are taken off probation. During the time a student is on probation, if he or she does not maintain the requested changes, it will be considered grounds for dismissal.

  The Faculty and Administration reserve the right to dismiss any individual student after a thorough evaluation of the student's progress or lack thereof. In the event of a student's dismissal, the reasons for the dismissal and the criteria used are fully explained to the student in a personal interview with the School Director. If the student wishes to appeal his or her case, they may do so, in writing to the School Director. • Can I pay my tuition with a credit card?
  We accept Master Card and Visa. Payments can be for your entire tuition or for a portion of it. However, we discourage paying your tuition on a credit card unless you have the funds to pay it off right away. • Does the tuition increase every year?
  No. Tuition increases are reviewed and decided upon on a yearly basis. An increase depends on the costs of running the school and inflation. • What do I need to do to apply for financial aid?
  Please fill out your F.A.F.S.A. form online. The F.A.F.S.A. website has instructions and will guide you through the financial aid process. Once all your paperwork is complete and you have been accepted into the program, we certify your financial aid amounts and verify that you will be an incoming student. Financial aid, by law cannot be distributed until you have been enrolled in a program for about a month. • What is the tuition refund policy?
  Students who must, for whatever reason, withdraw from any Theatre School program, will receive refunds of tuition in the following manner:
  
  *First Year Students will receive a pro-rated tuition refund equal to the portion of the period of enrollment which remains from the student's last recorded date of attendance, less any unpaid tuition balance.
  
  *Second Year and all Summer Workshop Students will receive refunds according to the following schedule:

  • Withdrawal within the first calendar week from opening date: 85%
  • Withdrawal within the second calendar week from opening date: 70%
  • Withdrawal within the third calendar week from opening date: 55%
  • Withdrawal after the completion of the third calendar week: NONE

• Where can I look for housing in NYC?
  A lot of students go through Craigs List to find affordable housing. Check out Craigs List and click on the New York version. Also check out The New York Times and The Village Voice
  
  The other ways people find apartments in NYC are: word of mouth, going through a broker, and staying with family that lives in the Metro area.
  
  Incoming students who need a place to live in New York may contact the School Office for any current information regarding housing sources, potential roommates or apartment rentals. This information is limited and made available only to incoming/current students. Incoming students are advised to make preparations prior to arrival as locating affordable housing in the city can be difficult.

• Where do most Circle students live?
  Our students live in a variety of neighborhoods around the city. Hell's Kitchen (a.k.a. Clinton) is the neighborhood most convenient to Circle, about a 5-10 minute walk.
  
  We have a number of students who live in the affordable neighborhoods of Astoria (in Queens), Harlem (in upper Manhattan), Washington Heights (in upper, upper Manahttan near the George Washington Bridge and Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital), and Inwood (North of Washington Heights, the most upper part of Manhattan).
